Boxing going unfair? Scoring disagreement, and changing judges!

August 13th, 2008

Chinese Gu Yu took the lead in 1st round of the boxing, for the Bantam Weight competition, by beating England’s Joe Murray 17-7.

Judges were faced by a very violent criticism from the British coach who accused them of counting points in favor of the Chinese player in a very generous way. When it came to Murray himself, he conveyed that after watching the scoring of the past few days, he was getting ready and expecting that he will be unfairly treated too in the game.

“I knew what it was going to be like. I’ve been watching the scoring the past few days and I knew it was bad so I was expecting it.”

Knowing that an electronic scoring system is currently used since Seoul’s games in 1988, thus it doesn’t seem so effective or trustworthy. Ukrainians have also registered a complaint, but it ended up rejected!

Murray’s coach also declared that it all happened in front of people’s eyes and TV sets, and judges are not being fair in the game scoring.

Will the sport of boxing get affected by the unfair treatment of non-Chinese boxers?
