1st Russian gold medal in women’s tennis

August 16th, 2008

Safina took advantage of the beloved host Li Na who was making a series of unforced errors and looking desperately nervous.

Lack of experience maybe? Or excess of tension and pressure?

The packed stadium was all cheering for their local girl, while focused and strong hearted Russian kept cruising to end the game with a score of 7-6(3)  7-5

In the other final 4 game, Russian Dementieva , was playing Vera Zvonareva. The game was relatively easy for the Russian (silver medalist of Sydney) although she faced a tough resistance from Zvonareva who saved a couple of match points and drove Russia’s player into an additional set.

After all, Dementieva ended her game 6-3  7-6(3).

Russian feminine tennis will be celebrating the 1st golden medal tomorrow, in a Russian to Russian combat! 1 thing is for sure, a bet on Russia is definitely a win, but still, the winner’s name remains unknown!
